6 Instagram DM Automation Tools Compared (Comment-to-DM and More)
Six Instagram DM automation tools compared on comment-to-DM, story replies, email capture and pricing model, with Meta's messaging rules in one place.

Instagram DM automation tools all do the headline trick: someone comments a keyword and gets a DM. The differences are in what happens next, where the leads end up, how you pay, and whether the automation lives next to the content that triggers it. Here are six options, checked October 2026, and the Meta rules every one of them works within.
The short answer
If you need DM automation across Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, SMS and email, with AI replies and deep CRM connections, ManyChat is the specialist and probably the right pick. If you already plan and publish in a social media tool, check whether it includes comment-to-DM before paying for a second product. Sequence, Hootsuite, SocialPilot, Metricool and Vista Social all offer it in some form, on different plans.
Sequence's angle is that the automation is set up on the post itself, even before the post is published, so your content calendar and your DM flows don't drift apart. It is also the narrowest on channels: Instagram and Facebook only.
Meta's rules every Instagram DM automation tool works within
Every tool here uses Meta's official messaging API, so the same limits apply whichever one you choose. Knowing them saves you blaming a tool for a platform rule.
- Professional account. You need an Instagram Business or Creator account (Meta's messaging API docs).
- The 24-hour window. Once a person messages your account, you can reply for 24 hours. Click-to-Direct ads extend that to 7 days, and the Human Agent tag gives a separate 7-day window for replies written by a person.
- Private replies. A DM sent in response to a comment is a private reply: one message per commenter, within 7 days of the comment. On a Live, only while the broadcast is running. Anything after that first message needs the person to reply (private replies).
- Rate limits. Private replies to posts and Reels are capped at 750 calls an hour per account (rate limiting).
You'll see "200 DMs an hour" quoted around the web. We couldn't find that figure in Meta's documentation, so don't plan a campaign around it.
The reply-first rule matters most in practice. The first DM to a commenter is one message, and everything after it depends on the person writing back. Good flows are designed around that rather than ignoring it.
What to compare
- Triggers: comments on any post or one post, story replies, mentions, keywords in DMs, first-time DMs.
- What the DM can do: buttons, multi-step paths, waits, a follower check.
- Lead capture: does it ask for an email, check it, and send it somewhere useful?
- Pricing model: per contact, per user, per brand, or bundled into a plan.
- Where it lives: a standalone bot, or inside the tool you already publish from.

The six tools in detail
1. Sequence DM Flows: automation tied to the post
DM Flows is part of Sequence Pro and labelled Beta. It runs on Instagram and Facebook accounts connected to Sequence. A flow can start on comments on any post, or on one post you pick, published or still scheduled: a scheduled post's flow switches on when the post goes live, so you can set up an Auto-DM from the post's own card before it publishes. Flows can also answer story replies on Instagram, match the same keyword in DMs, and send a welcome message to someone's first-ever DM, with up to four Instagram conversation starters.
Each flow can post a public reply (up to five variations, so it doesn't look robotic), wait up to 24 hours, ask non-followers to follow first on Instagram, and send a DM with up to three buttons. A button can open a link or start a short path of messages, waits and one Ask for email step. On Instagram comment flows, Reply first fits Meta's rule neatly: the opening private reply is a plain message, and the DM with your link buttons goes only to commenters who answer it.
Ask for email checks the reply looks like an email, asks again up to twice, can show a consent line and tags the contact. Every email lands in Contacts with a CSV export, and can be sent to Zapier, Make or your own webhook (how email capture works). Results show comments matched, DMs sent, reads, link clicks, drop-off and emails collected. There is no per-contact charge.
Limits: Instagram and Facebook only. No TikTok, WhatsApp or SMS automation, no broadcasts, no new-follower DMs, and HubSpot, Mailchimp, Klaviyo and Google Sheets connections are listed as coming soon. DM Flows isn't on the Free plan.
Best for: teams and agencies that plan, approve and publish content in one place and want auto-DMs built alongside each post.
2. ManyChat: the multichannel specialist
ManyChat is built for messaging first. Comment-to-DM, story replies and mentions, Live comments and keyword triggers are available from its free plan. Email and phone capture and a follower-status check start on Essential, AI replies on Pro, and Pro also connects to Zapier, HubSpot, Klaviyo and others. It covers Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS and email, and describes itself as an official Meta Business Partner.
Pricing is based on active contacts, with per-contact charges above each plan's allowance, and depends on your billing country, so check the page for your region. The free plan includes 25 contacts and 4 live automations, enough to test a single flow.
Best for: brands whose sales happen in conversations across several channels. If DMs are your main funnel, ManyChat goes deeper than any scheduler here. It doesn't plan or publish your posts, so you'll still run a separate social tool.
3. Hootsuite: comment-to-DM inside a big suite
Hootsuite says Instagram comment-to-DM keyword automation is built into all plans, and its Instagram auto-reply guide explains the setup. Professional and above also list "Automate inbox replies and workflows", and the unified inbox is on every plan. Pricing is per user: Standard is US$99 per user a month billed annually, Professional US$199, and monthly prices aren't published (Hootsuite plans).
Best for: teams already on Hootsuite. Adding users gets expensive quickly, which our Sequence vs Hootsuite comparison works through.
4. SocialPilot: inbox automation for agencies on a budget
SocialPilot's Social Inbox Automation adds Instagram comment-to-DM and keyword DM auto-replies on Standard and above. The same plans include an inbox for comments, DMs and story replies. Standard costs US$40 a month, or US$34 billed annually, for 10 accounts and 3 users; client approvals and white-label reports start on Premium at US$100 (SocialPilot pricing).
Best for: small agencies that want scheduling, an inbox and basic auto-replies at a low entry price. See Sequence vs SocialPilot for how the two compare on approvals.
5. Metricool: Flows for analytics-led teams
Metricool's Flows cover Instagram comment-to-DM, DM keywords and story replies on paid plans, at no extra cost "for a limited time", so check the current terms before you rely on it. Starter costs US$25 a month, or US$20 annually, for up to 5 brands (Metricool pricing). The free plan doesn't include Flows.
Best for: price-conscious teams that care most about analytics and reporting. Our Sequence vs Metricool post explains where Metricool's lower price makes sense.
6. Vista Social: automation on every plan
Vista Social includes DM Automations on all plans: Instagram comment-to-DM (any comment or a keyword), story replies, mentions and a followers-only option. Lead collection starts on Advanced. Professional costs US$99 a month or US$950 a year for 15 profiles, and Advanced US$199 a month (Vista Social pricing). Its inbox covers comments, DMs and reviews on every plan.
Best for: teams that want automation included from the first paid plan alongside a broad network list.
Where the leads end up
Sending the DM is the easy part. The useful question is what happens to the person afterwards. ManyChat has the deepest set of native integrations, on Pro. Sequence keeps every person who messaged in Contacts, with their email, tags, the flow they came from and whether Meta's 24-hour window is still open, and sends each collected email to Zapier, Make or a webhook. Vista Social offers lead collection on Advanced. For Hootsuite, SocialPilot and Metricool we couldn't confirm a built-in email capture step, so test it on a trial if leads are the goal.
Which one should you choose?
- You need WhatsApp, TikTok or SMS automation: ManyChat.
- You're happy with Hootsuite, SocialPilot, Metricool or Vista Social: try the built-in automation before adding another tool.
- You plan, approve and publish client content and want auto-DMs set up on each post: Sequence Pro.
- You're testing one flow on one account: ManyChat's free plan or a scheduler trial is enough.
Set up your first comment-to-DM flow
Whatever tool you choose, the same pattern works:
- Pick one post with a clear offer, such as a guide, a discount or a booking link.
- Choose a keyword that is a real word and match it as a whole word, so unrelated comments don't trigger it.
- Write a public reply so other viewers can see that commenting works.
- Keep the first DM short and ask a question, because the person has to reply before you can send more.
- Deliver the link after they reply, and ask for an email only when you've given a reason.
- After a week, compare comments matched, DMs sent and link clicks, then adjust the keyword or the offer.
Choosing a wider platform
DM automation is one part of the job. If you're also weighing up planning, approvals, publishing and reporting, our guide to the best all-in-one social media management software compares ten platforms on the whole workflow, and the all-in-one social media management platform page shows how Sequence connects posts, the inbox and DM Flows.
DM Flows is included in Sequence Pro and in the 14-day Pro trial (see pricing). If you want your next post and its auto-DM set up in the same place, try Sequence.
